Greetings!

Last night we had our seventh showing at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago. It has been an honor and a great experience to have so many screenings at this respected cinema that regularly screens some of the best films from around the world and from all eras. We had large crowds attend who all ended up with smiles on their faces. We heard many heartwarming stories from some audience members about their experiences with Wisconsin supper clubs and enthusiasm from others who had never been to a supper club before but were now hoping to visit some soon.

Directory Holly L. De Ruyter is currently on the road with Mary Bergin, author of Wisconsin Supper Club Cookbook, for a sold out supper club event tonight at Lehman's Supper Club in Rice Lake featuring a screening of Old Fashioned.

Greater Midwest Foodways Supper Club Event

We had two sold out screenings at the Gene Siskel in Chicago earlier this year. The demand for tickets was so high the Siskel has just added FIVE more screenings!! Director Holly De Ruyter will attend all the screenings and will take part in a Question and Answer after each screenings. Tickets go on sale next week. In 2015 our focus was taking “Old Fashioned” on the film festival circuit. Last year we also did a handful of community screenings. These proved to be so successful we are continuing them into next year! To add to the appeal of the screenings we have teamed up with Wisconisn author Mary Bergin. Whose book "Wisconsin Supper Club Cookbook" also came out last year. Mary and I are in the middle of booking venues and will release the locations and dates soon! The Music of "Old Fashioned"

We are often asked where we found the vintage jazz music in the documentary. People often think it’s from some great-unknown band from the 30’s or 40's. Surprise! The music is written by Glenn Crytzer, a modern day musician who writes new jazz compositions that have that vintage feel to it. When we discovered Glenn’s music we were blown away and further impressed by the fact that it was all composed and performed by Glenn and his band. Rarely do you hear about current artists creating original pieces of this type of music anymore.

"Old Fashioned" at The Refuge In Appleton

Our latest screening of the season was hosted by The Appleton Post Crescent Insider program. The exclusive event was only open to their readers. The event took place at The Refuge, an old monastery, now converted into an artist refuge and event space. The film was shown in the converted chapel as viewers sipped on old fashioneds and munched on popcorn. A special shout out to musician Corey Chisel, who oversees the the property for letting us screen there.

Chicago and Other Future Screenings

We are excited to announce that we will be screening at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago in January. The Gene Siskle is the premier movie theatre in Chicago for independent, international, and classic cinema. We are honored to be selected to be part of the Gene Siskle's Stranger Than Fiction series in January. Exact dates for Old Fashioned screenings have not been released yet. Watch for them in a future newsletter!

The fall film festival circuit may be over, but there will be more screenings of Old Fashioned at film festivals and community screenings once the holidays are over. Weyauwega International Film Festival

Supper Club Lovers,

Thank you to everyone who came out to all of our many screenings within the past week at the Central Wisconsin Film Festival, the East Lansing Film Festival, the Driftless Film Festival and the Big Water Film Festival where we were honored to receive the award for Best Documentary. We had a busy but enjoyable time traveling around Wisconsin to be present at several of these screenings. We also met some great people and ate at some supper clubs we had never been to before.

Tonight "Old Fashioned" will be playing for the fourth and final time at the Central Wisconsin Film Festival at Lettie W. Jensen Center in Amherst. It also will be screening at a sold out event at theFive O'Clock Steakhouse in Milwaukee.

We are planning on releasing the film for purchase on DVD and streaming online in just a few days so stay tuned for that announcement.

Tomorrow, Saturday, November 14, "Old Fashioned" is screening at the Weyauwega International Film Festival in Weyauwega, WI. The filmmakers will be present for a Q&A.

The screening is at The Gerold Opera House and starts at 6:00 PM.

The venue has food and a full bar, so you can enjoy an actual old fashioned cocktail while you watch the film.

Last weekend Old Fashioned was shown to another sold out crowd, this time at the Flyway Film Festival. We always love traveling to this beautiful part of the state near the Mississippi river.

We are gearing up for our busiest weekend for screenings of Old Fashioned yet. Over the next two weeks it will be screening nine times. Those screenings are spread all over Wisconsin as well as one in Michigan.

Some of these screenings are detailed below, but you can always see the full list at our website. It's likely that there is a screening close to you. So tell all of your friends, get together for a night out for a movie and maybe relax at a supper club before or after (or both!).

A Screening in Michigan

Do you live in lower Michigan? Do you know anyone who lives there?

We are screening at the East Lansing Film Festival. While supper clubs are almost ubiquitous in Wisconsin, even in places as close as Michigan most people have never heard of them. We hope our film will introduce some new people to supper clubs and inspire them to take a trip to Wisconsin to check some out.

Heading all the way up to the coast of Lake Superior, we will be present for the screening of Old Fashioned at the Big Water Film Festival. The film will round out a block of films starting at 4:00 pm on Saturday, November 7. The venue is the Bay Theater in Ashland, WI.

Screening This Weekend in Pepin, WI

We’re about to hit the road on our way to the Flyway Film Festival. Tickets are still available for thescreening of our film on Sunday, Oct. 25th at 3pm. The timing of the screening is perfect to grab supper afterwards at a supper club. Which one would you go to?

Four Film Festivals In One Weekend!

In early November we have one weekend where “Old Fashioned” will be screening at FOUR different festivals!!! We’re happy to say we will be attending three out of the four festival. We will be attending screenings at the Central Wisconsin Film Festival, Big Water Film Festival, and Driftless Film Festival. Talk about a Wisconsin road trip! Sadly we will not be able to be present at the screening at the East Lansing Film Festival in lower Michigan, but we're excited to be sharing the story of the Wisconsin supper club with our friends across the pond (as of the time this email is being sent the film is mistakenly not listed on festival website, but it should be fixed soon. Fall Film Festival Season Starts!

Supper Club Lovers,

We kicked off our fall film festival screenings by showing “Old Fashioned” at the Milwaukee Film Festival. We sold out two shows and almost filled the theater of our third screening even though it was Monday night at 10pm! The screening at the supper club event at the Dorf Haus in Sauk City was also a big success. We loved meeting everyone that came out to the screenings and hearing about how much they enjoyed the film. It means a lot to me when people tell me how much the film touched them and that they want to share it with other people in their life. I’m looking forward to attending more film festivals and community screenings this fall and hope to meet more of you at them!

Encore Green Bay Screenings Start TODAY!

Our first screening at the De Pere Cinema was such a success that we are returning Wednesday, October 7th and Thursday October 8th both at 7:00 pm. Director Holly De Ruyter will be present for a question and answer session after both screenings. Come hungry as the De Pere Cinema sells food. Flyway Film Festival

We can’t wait to visit Pepin, WI for the Flyway Film Festival and the showing of “Old Fashioned” on Sunday, October 25th at 3:00 pm. "Celebrating Supper Clubs" Event at the Dorf Haus

“Old Fashioned” is teaming up with freelance journalist and author of “Wisconsin Supper Club Cookbook” Mary Bergin for a special evening at the Dorf Haus (Sauk City, WI) called “Celebrating Supper Clubs”. The event will be held Thursday, October 1st at 6:30 PM and will feature discounted old fashioneds, Wollersheim’s Gewurztraminer Wine, and a delish Bavarian buffet. “Old Fashioned” will screen after dinner as guests sip on grasshoppers. Mary and Holly will be present to talk supper clubs and sell Mary’s book.

We are excited to announce will we will have “Old Fashioned” online and ready for sale by the holiday season. The documentary will be available for purchase as a DVD or downloadable version. If you are a Kickstarter contributor whose reward was a copy of the documentary you will be receiving your film copy soon. More information will be provided in future newsletters.

Old Fashioned Premiere Update

Supper club lovers,

Old Fashioned had its world premier at the Wisconsin Film Festival in Madison on April 10th and the response was amazing! The first two screenings sold out the day tickets went on sale, and then due to that a third screening was scheduled which also sold out.

We knew that people were connecting with the people, images, and stories on the screen because of the cheers, applause and laughs during the film. Associate producer Brian Risselada and I were glad to answer many great questions after each of the showings and at some other special events, including the Q&A after the premier hosted by host of Wisconsin Foodie, Kyle Cherek. It was a joy to meet so many excited and supportive audience members throughout my time at the festival. I'm also grateful to the talented and capable staff of the Wisconsin Film Festival and for their hospitality.

It's been rewarding to have the results of these six years of work finally be so enthusiastically enjoyed and appreciated by an audience. We can't wait for the rest of you who could not make it to the festival to see it as well, so stay tuned for upcoming information about future screenings and availability of the film.

Old Fashioned’s First Review

The first review of Old Fashioned: The Story of the Wisconsin Supper Club is out and it’s glowing! Reviewer Lindsay Christians of The Capital Times in Madison attending a screening at the festival which was entitled Dinner, Drinks, and Entertainment and featured two other films about Wisconsin culture. She has adeptly articulated the experience of being at the screening and the film itself.

Talking Supper Clubs

When we were in Madison director Holly De Ruyter was asked to Wisconsin Public Radio's The Joy Cardin Show. Holly spent an hour talking with Joy about supper clubs, the documentary and fielding questions and comments from callers. Holly had a great time doing the show.

Tax-deductible Donations

Old Fashioned has been a project of passion. The majority of it has been made with donated equipment and talent, but there are some expenses that still come up. Throughout this project we have worked hard to find the highest quality materials and services at the most affordable costs. A typical budget for a film of this caliber would usually run around $40,000, but we have been able to get a lot done with much less. Even though the film is complete we still have some outstanding expenses and are seeking donations to help pay for these. We have acquired a fiscal sponsor which means donations will be tax deductible. Donations will help to pay for the following expenses:

• Color Correction: $3,000
• Audio Mix: $1,700
• Archive Video & Stills: $1,350
• Music: $1,140
• Final Tape Layoff: $500
• Film Festival Entry Fees: $500
• Insurance: $2,300
• Fiscal Sponsor Fee: $540

The total of these expenses is $11,030 of which we have far we have raised $5,680.

World Premier

Supper Club Lovers,

Right now we are in Madison getting ready for Old Fashioned: The Story of the Wisconsin Supper Club to have its world premiere tomorrow at the Wisconsin Film Festival. Last night we were honored and thrilled to show the film at a private event to around 250 people for the Wisconsin Alumni Association. This was the first time the film has been seen on a big screen to a large audience and we were thrilled to hear all of the clapping, cheering, and laughing throughout the film. We also participated in a Q&A after the film as seen in the photo to the left.

It's been a long journey since starting this project in 2009, but clearly it's been worth the wait.

Wisconsin Film Festival Screenings

We knew there would be an interest in a documentary about supper clubs, but our socks were knocked off when we discovered that the advance tickets for the two screenings of Old Fashioned: The Story of the Wisconsin Supper Club sold out within hours of going on sale! We did not even have a chance to send out newsletter out letting people know tickets were on sale. The demand was so remarkable that a third screening was added! That screening also sold out of advanced tickets. While tickets can no longer be purchased ahead of time for any of the screenings, there will be some rush tickets available for people on the days of the showings. Information about times and locations of the screenings can be found here. The film screening is listed as "Dinner, Drinks, Entertainment" where it will be shown with two other short films about Wisconsin culture - "Little America" and "Tale of the Spotted Cow".

Director Holly L. De Ruyter and Associate Producer Brian Risselada will also be appearing at a free Wisconsin Filmmakers Panel Discussion on Saturday, April 11 at 10:00 am at Sundance Cinemas Madison. The address is 430 N Midvale Blvd (In the Hilldale Mall), Madison, Wisconsin 53705.

The Future

Now that you know the film is finished, we are sure you are excited to see it as soon as possible. We are just as excited for you to see it as well! However if you are unable to see it at the Wisconsin Film Festival a bit more patience may be required. We are submitting the film for consideration to be shown at other film festivals this fall. Most festivals will not consider showing a film if it is already available for purchase. Keep an eye out for future newsletters for information about when and where the film will be available.

New Year Update

A Note From The Director

Hello fellow supper club lovers!

It’s been a long time. Too long. This past year was an eventful and exciting year for me. I had plans to finish my film and get married. Two major life events in one year, and I thought I could do it all. Then I realized that if I wanted to make a quality documentary, plan the wedding of our dreams, and not lose my marbles, something had to put hold. So this past year I had the hard decision to put my documentary on the back burner while I focused on planning our wedding. The good news is that we got married on a beautiful Wisconsin fall day and had our wedding reception at a charming Wisconsin supper club. Success! Now that the wedding and honeymoon are complete I’m taking my documentary off the back burner and moving full speed ahead with completing it in 2013. The documentary is currently in post production, which means editing, the sound mix and color correction, among other things, are being done at this stage. I’m excited to share the story of the Wisconsin supper club and the individual stories of their owners and keepers with you and the world this year.

A Supper Club Wedding

There was no question when planning our wedding where we wanted to have our reception at. A Wisconsin supper club of course! We choose to have our reception at The Lake House Inn in Edgerton, WI. There is much to love about this supper club. It is out in the country, the kind of supper club tucked away in the back roads of Wisconsin visited mostly by locals or people who have stumbled upon it while out on a Sunday drive. The interior’s rustic feel fit our personalities and interests. The owner Robert Walter and his family were a joy to work with. They are down to earth and friendly people. We could have not asked for better people to plan a wedding with! The wedding went off without a hitch, and our guest had a great time. People raved about the broasted chicken, prime rib, and the great service. Many of our guests were upset that they don’t live in the area and thus are not able to visit The Lake House Inn on a regular bases. We do know that The Lake House Inn does have two new “regulars” who will be driving up from Chicago anytime they can for some delicious supper club fair and to reminisce about their special day. We are happy to say that we reached our goal on KickStarter.com of raising $5,000 to help finish “Old Fashioned”. A big THANK YOU to everyone who donated and to the people who have been sending words of encouragement and well wishes. I have put so many hours into this documentary that I cannot express the joy I feel as I see the piece taking shape and coming together. A huge burden has been lifted off my shoulders knowing now that we have the money to pay for things like image rights, larger external drives, festivals fees, an editor budget and many other things that need money in order to get our documentary to the public. Supper Club Night at Kenmore Studios

Tonight we will be taking part in a Wisconsin Supper Club night at Kenmore Live Studios in Chicago, IL. Kenmore Live Studios tapes 30 min shows where chefs and fashion designers come to show you their skills and share their inside tips. Tonight’s show is all about the Wisconsin supper club! I will be there to discuss my documentary and to show some new never before released clips from it. Chef James from The HobNob supper club in Kenosha, WI will be there demonstrating how to cook some classic Wisconsin supper club fare. If you are in Chicago you can join us for the taping. If you want to come to the taping you can find the information about attending on our Facebook event page. Not in Chicago? No worries! You can watch the taping stream live on the internet. The show will start streaming live at 7 p.m. CST. The people watching it stream live can still participate by sending in any questions they have via a live chat. If you miss the stream when it happens live an edited version will be posted later on YouTube. We will post that link on our website when it’s available. We’re excited for tonight and can’t wait to share our love for the supper club with Chicago!

If you're in Chicago you can be in the audience at the LIVE taping and get samples of what James whips up. Best thing is the event is FREE! Not in Chicago? Hi Supper Club Lovers,

It's been a long time since our last newsletter, but the good news is we have been dedicating our time to working onOld Fashioned. I’m especially excited for this newsletter because it announces the launch of our Kickstarter campaign! This campaign marks one of the final steps in getting this documentary out to you. What is Kickstarter you ask? Kickstarter is a way to raise money online for projects of all types including music, photography, fashion, films, and other specific works that have clearly defined goals and expectations. You can learn more about Kickstarter here. The production costs of Old Fashionedso far have been covered in a large part by me, the director. Money has also come from a fundraiser that was held in Chicago in March of this year and from private donors. Please visit our Kickstarter page to see a short video featuring me explaining the project and how the money raised will be utilized. Depending on the size of your donation, you will receive various gifts as our way of saying “thanks”. Who doesn’t a “Love for the Supper Club” t-shirt to show their Wisconsin pride? One of the biggest challenges of making a film is getting the word out. An even bigger challenge is raising money for the film. When raising funds every donation helps! If all you can donate is $5, that’s $5 closer to our goal. With Kickstarter, if we do not meet our goal we get nothing! Our goal is $5,000, which is the minimum we need to get our documentary completed, so it’s important we raise this money. The deadline to meet this goal is January 1, 2012. We have already received some donations on our Kickstarter campaign, and for each one we feel loved and appreciated knowing there are people out there who support our project and hard work. Even if you can’t donate right now please spread the word! If you aren't familiar, Kickstarter is the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world. Our goal is $5,000 in pledges by January 1, 2012.

Fall is for Editing

Boy summer flew by!  We have been busy working on editing ”Old Fashioned” and making some sweet motion graphics to bring the WI supper club to life.   Stay tuned as we will be posting our campaign soon to raise funds for the finishing of the film.   



A week of shooting

We are currently in the middle of a week long of shooting around the state of Wisconsin.  We are getting our final interviews, filming some new suppers clubs, and revisiting a few of our favorites.  After this most of the shooting will be complete and we will beging working on post production and editing.  You can continue to find future updates about the film at this website or by following us on our Facebook page.
